United Nations (UN) on Thursday, 13th October 2022 trained MMUST library staff and students on access to its e- resources for sustainable development. This was evident during the visit by the UN team led by the Information Management Assistant- UN Center Nairobi, Mr. Tirus Wainaina to the UN Information Corner at the University Library. The event was organized by the Ag. Librarian, Mr. Vincent Chibini was geared towards linking MMUST's e- library to the UN digital library, creating free access to the UN online resources, and creating awareness about the UN.
Gracing the event, the DVC Academics and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Hussein Golicha, commended the UN for making a bold step to partner with MMUST in offering library services. He assured them of creating awareness about the UN online resources.
“Through the UN digital library, the University will not only advance in knowledge and resources but also improve its visibility to the world. This will also ease the learning of our students,” stated Prof. Golicha.
Registrar, Planning Research and Innovation (PRI), Prof. Alice Ndiema representing the DVC PRI, Prof. Charles Mutai, acknowledged that the UN e- library will boost the University in the areas of research. “Research being one of the University’s niche areas, our group of researchers will greatly benefit from these resources. This will enhance service delivery and encourage innovations,” she said.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Wainaina noted that MMUST Librarian will access a lot of information useful to the staff, students, and the community at large. He added that MMUST encompasses students from various parts of the globe; the resources can be obtained in six official languages of the UN.
“UN digital library gives free resources with relevant information in thematic areas of research,” stated Mr. Wainaina. Further, he highlighted services offered at the UN which can benefit the students including; Internships, volunteering, and career opportunities.
The other personalities from the UN included; Chief Visitors Service Officer- UN Center Nairobi, Ms.Thao Tran and Administrator, Ms. Janice Ndwati.
Indeed, such partnership programme is a sign of commitment to sustainable development goals to the University.
On a virtual presentation, Ms. Tran welcomed everyone to visit all 28 UN entities. She revealed that visitors can tour the UN both physically and virtually with the same experience. The tours are conducted at a fee ranging from 300 to 500, thereby a certificate is awarded.
Expressing his gratitude towards the UN, Mr. Chibini echoed the sentiments of the Registrar PRI stating that the UN corner will be very helpful to the University, especially in the areas of research. He assured fruitful teamwork with the UN for a better future. Equally, the Lecturer, of the Department of Languages and Literature Education, Mr. Robinson Oduma emphasized that the partnership will strengthen and soar the flag of MMUST to the dynamic global market.
“We look forward to celebrating one of the UN International holidays at MMUST as a sign of a concrete relationship between the two institutions,” said Mr. Chibini.
